Heading to the beach in summer is a no-brainer; the trick in the school holidays is to find spots that haven’t already been taken over by sun seekers.
The Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast are the default options for many Brisbanites – mainly due to the convenience. But by taking the road less travelled, you can find some sun, sand with some personal space as well.
Shelly Beach in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast isn’t a swimming beach because of the rough waves, but there are rock pools teeming with sea life – so a great day out for any budding marine biologists in the family.
Just an hour or so outside of Brisbane, Woorim on Bribie Island is a great beach to introduce kids to the surf, with nothing but small waves thanks to Moreton Island taking some of the nastier swells. It’s patrolled, and Bribie’s Surf Club can take care of lunch.
Tallebudgera Creek Inlet may not have surf, but what it lacks in waves – it makes up for with privacy. Given that it’s right next to very popular Burleigh, it’s easy enough to get to – but still secluded enough that you can have a relaxing day at the beach.
Tallow Beach in Byron Bay is a perfect escape for those looking to head south – and is nowhere near as crowded as some of the better-known beaches, even as the little town becomes a haven for sea changers. There are even self-contained beach houses there, so you can make a weekend out of it.
If you’ve got the time to head north these holidays, the Fraser Coast is packed with sleepy coastal towns, ready for your next family adventure. Rainbow Beach is seen as the gateway to Fraser Island and has strips of beach just waiting for picnics. Inskip Point has campsites a quick drive up the road, in addition to the seaside getaways and hotels of Rainbow Beach.
Before you head off these school holidays, make sure your car is filled up with petrol and it’s been serviced by an expert technician – the last thing you want is to be stranded on the roadside.
Stay safe on the roads this summer, and we hope you have a cool holidays and fantastic New Year.
