5+1 Reasons to buy a new Toyota Camry

The new Toyota Camry is a game-changing new vehicle – with new V6 options, as well as the economical hybrid versions.

We looked at the top five reasons to get into the new sedan.

Space

On paper, the new Toyota Camry is dubbed a ‘medium’ sedan – but at just under 5m long and sitting on a longer wheelbase than the last model (which was no sardine can either), the new Camry is well equipped to take on five passengers and their accompanying stuff.

With bottle bins and storage cubbies galore, it’s not hard-pressed for small storage either, making it family friendly to its core.

Safety & convenience

The new top-shelf Camry SL might come with blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert as standard, but the rest of the range is hardly poverty pack territory.

Toyota’s Safety Sense+ pack is standard across the range including pre-collision safety system, lane departure alert, automatic high beam and active cruise control. That means that, regardless of whether you buy the entry-level Ascent or cash in to buy the fully-specced V6 Camry SL, you’ll be as safe as houses.

Dual zone climate control is standard from the Ascent Sport up, as is satellite navigation. There’s even wireless phone charging as well as front and rear USB ports in the Camry SX and SL, while the top-of-the-range model cops a 10” colour Head Up Display, so you can keep your eyes focused on the road ahead and keep updated on your car’s vital information.

Engine choice

The V6 Camry hasn’t been seen around in a while, with the Toyota Aurion filling the local six-cylinder sedan space for just over a decade. Now that Camry’s hitting our roads are back to being shipped from Japan, the V6 Camry is back to join the four-cylinder and hybrid models that have continued to make it Australia’s best selling mid-sized sedan.

The hybrid models in particular, with their blend of two engines to give lively performance and cut down on fuel consumption, are one-two punch of dynamic driving and cost-cutting practicality. The fact that the hybrid drivetrain does nothing to weigh the car down, or cut into its usable space with its battery pack is a free kick. The official numbers see the Camry Hybrid using 4.2L/100km – in the real world, this will go up a little; but at under 5L/100km, the hybrid is heads and shoulders above the rest of the competition.

The four-cylinder engine has been challenged with taking the Camry from family taxi to sporty sedan – something that it’s managed to do quite well. Thanks to improved mechanicals, the boffins have managed to harness the best of Japanese engineering to make the new model genuinely fun to drive.

And for those looking for even more get up and go from the family car, the V6 engine promises to be the most powerful engine fitted to a Toyota sedan – so it’s hardly a slouch. Gone are the days of your grandparent’s Camry, put your foot to the floor and the eight-speed automatic will kick you up on a highway faster than the tissue box on the back shelf can handle it.

Servicing costs

Toyota has made real in-roads with its capped price servicing program, and the Camry doesn’t disappoint. At just $195 for the first five scheduled services, with maximum logbook service pricing under $400 for even a major scheduled service, you won’t need to break into your savings; you’ll generally know what you’re paying before it’s due.

The latest generation Camry Ascent Hybrid has been praised for its class-leading efficiency and refinement taking out the title of Best Medium Car under $50,000 in the 2018 Australia's Best Cars (ABC) awards. At the annual ABC awards, presented by Australia's motoring organisations including the NRMA, RACV, RAA, RACWA, RACT and AANT, eight judges evaluated all vehicles on sale on a variety of criteria across three main areas: value for money, design and function, and on-road ability. In awarding the Camry the category win, the judges noted that in addition to its more powerful and efficient Hybrid Synergy Drive, the car delivered a substantial improvement in driving dynamics.
