In what is a debatably positive move, Brisbane is currently trialling left turns through red lights at five intersections throughout the South-East.
The system has already been successfully implemented throughout North America and Europe as well as select locations in New South Wales and South Australia. The system was also trialled on the Gold Coast starting in April this year, with as yet unknown results.
So heads up Queensland, if you’re out on the road and someone turns left on the red light in front of you, don’t panic-they may well be within their rights. Keep an eye out for the signs which will be located just below the signals themselves and state, “Left turn on red permitted after stopping”.

The trial will run until May next year where its effectiveness in reducing traffic congestion will be evaluated.
