We're having a chat with Hayden from Browns Plains Mazda, winner of the "Australian Mazda's Apprentice of the Year Award" for the second year in a row.
What drove you towards a mechanic career at Browns Plains Mazda?
I have always been interested in cars and while looking to further my personal skills, an opportunity at Browns Plains Mazda came available.
What does an Apprentice Mechanic do?
Learning all aspects of the trade.
Since you started as an apprentice, what has been your biggest learning curve?
COVID, which meant training has been frequently canceled or changed, or moved to online. I've also had to be more adaptive, and step up to other roles, like washing cars, driveway attendant and service consultant.
Is there anything you would like to say to other apprentices or people that are thinking of becoming one?
You get out what you put in. If you want to learn how to repair something, as an apprentice, you will not only learn how, but also learn why you are repairing it at the same time.
What’s the most eye opening thing you've learned about being a mechanic at Browns Plains Mazda?
I've been amazed to see the amount of effort & team work required to get a car from pre-delivery to being ready for delivery for a new vehicle customer.
How are you and other Apprentice Mechanics specially trained?
My apprenticeship is provided via Mazda Australia & through their Specialist Learning Centre.
How do you become a Mechanic after completing your apprenticeship?
My motto is to never stop learning or perfecting the way you do things.
Finally, finish this sentence: For my being an Apprentice Mechanic, means...
While doing something I enjoy, I will achieve a genuine qualification that will make it possible to go for higher achievements, furthering my career.
