Finding the right mix of practicality, comfort, and affordability can be challenging, however the Mitsubishi Triton is a serious contender.
With a double cab, style tray and enough raw power from the turbo diesel to handle almost everything you could throw at it, the 2014 Mitsubishi Triton GLX+ 4x4 needs to be on your list.
Available in a number of different configurations, including single cab, club cab and double cab with 4x4 or 4x2 drive types, there is bound to be a Triton to match your exact needs.
In our Triton GLX+ 4x4, we get to enjoy a 131kW/400Nm turbo diesel engine, Bluetooth connectivity, manual or automatic transmission options, alloy wheels plus a nice list of safety features including ABS, stability control, traction control and 6 airbags. All of which is priced competitively at under $30k drive away.
The question is though; can something at this price point still deliver when it comes to driving on the road, overall comfort and practicality? Let’s find out.
Like most utilities designed for work, looks don’t tend to take the main stage when the vehicle is being developed. However, we found the Triton to be better looking than some of its competition when seeing it in the flesh.
Measuring at 5.21 metres, the length of the Triton is definitely noticeable. Add this to the 1.8 metre width and you gain some extra space in the tray and cabin.
Looking through the interior of our review model, and you start to appreciate the focus of the Triton. Everything has been designed to be thrown around and to keep going day to day.
With a high driving position, good sized steering wheel, and an easy to use clutch in the manual model, the Triton is easy to drive and handle day to day.
Power delivery is solid and consistent throughout the rev range; just don’t expect to be able to turn up to work unnoticed, with the diesel engine sounding very much like a truck.
When adding weight or towing a trailer, the gear ratios are great and this ensures that you won’t be left wanting before you get up to speed.
As for fuel economy, we found our review model to do quite well by using an average of 9L/100km during our 510km review. With a 75 litre fuel tank, you should be able to see over 850km from each tank.
Because of the traits that utility vehicles have, the inclusion of traction control, stability control, ABS and EBD mean that you have that added peace of mind when driving with or without a load or trailer on the back.
The Triton is, of course, all about practicality. Not only can it tow a 3,000kg trailer, but it can also carry you and a few of your closest working buddies with ease.
With a built tough feel, you won’t have to worry about treating the Triton like a glass vase. However, we would recommend a tray liner to protect the paint in the tray if you’re going to be moving large hard items or piles of gravel.
Initially we were intimidated with its size when attempting to travel down and park at the shops, but we got accustomed to the size. We would still recommend adding a reversing camera to make reversing much easier in all situations.
There’s competitive pricing, and then there is great value when discussing new cars. We’d place our review model in the great value category with a drive away price under $30,000 for a 4x4 dual cab.
If you were to look at a similar model with the same specs, you would need to be prepared to pay closer to $40,000.
Mitsubishi also includes a 5 Year/130,000km Factory Warranty, Capped Price Servicing for the first 4 years of scheduled services and 12 months of 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the package.
All of which adds up to great peace of mind for a vehicle that is probably going to support you earning your income every day.
Sometimes pricing that is too low, can sometimes make alarm bells go off in your head. However, there isn’t anything wrong with this 2014 Mitsubishi Triton GLX+ 4x4.
It does give you a lot of value for money and not only is it great for work, but perfect for giving you the flexibility to get away on the weekend too.
