Review: 2024 Ford Mustang GT

Few cars evoke a sense of nostalgia and thrill like the Ford Mustang, and the new generation recently released is no exception.

With its roots firmly planted in the land of open highways and roaring V8s, this latest iteration embraces modern tech and performance enhancements while paying homage to its iconic lineage.

We recently spent the weekend with the latest model experiencing a thrilling ride that blends heritage with cutting-edge innovation.

Unmistakeably Mustang

The 2024 Mustang retains its unmistakable silhouette, but this time with a sleeker, more streamlined appearance that feels like a sharpened version of its predecessor.

Signature Mustang elements such as the aggressive front grille and tri-bar tail lights are still prominent, though the rear end feels slightly understated. This can be rectified by optioning yours with the GT Appearance Pack which gets a rear spoiler plus a set of racing stripes.

The new model is sprinkled with subtle Mustang easter eggs throughout the design, including a nod to the car’s history etched into the rear window.

Interior

Step inside, and you’re greeted by a cabin styled with carbon fibre elements and contemporary digital features.

The model we drove had the Recaro sports seat option that provide a snug, race-ready feel. Adjustable steering and powered seat options ensure you can find your ideal driving position, though the manual adjustment for seat angles feels like an odd omission in such a tech-laden car.

The rear seats, as expected, are more decorative than functional—perfect for stowing bags but a tight squeeze for passengers (don't expect any regular-sized adult to fit back here). Despite this, the Mustang’s boot is surprisingly spacious and will comfortably accommodate your golf bag with room to spare.

V8 Performance

At its heart, the new-generation GT model is powered by a revised Coyote 5.0-litre V8 engine. The brawny powerhouse includes twin air intakes and dual throttle bodies delivering even more performance than its predecessor although only just.

Power and torque figures are now 347kW and 550Nm respectively, while the weight of the vehicle has increased by about 50 kilos. When it comes to stopping power, Ford has slapped on a fat set of Brembo brakes to bring the Mustang to a halt.

The Mustang comes with the option of a six-speed manual gearbox or the 10-speed automatic transmission that we drove. The benefit of having ten gears is the finesse embodied in its gear changes which not only makes for a comfortable ride but also offers smooth, almost deceptive acceleration. On the other hand, cycling through 10 gears with the paddle shifters can feel a tad excessive at times although they do add that touch of manual-esque fun.

The Mustang GT delivers an exhilarating drive with responsive handling and enough power to easily unsettle the rear wheels—though Ford’s traction control system keeps things manageable.

Wild Child

The Mustang has a few wild features intended for track use but can't be left unmentioned.

Firstly, it comes with a dedicated drag strip mode. On top of this is the line lock feature that locks the front brakes so you can lay down a controlled burnout. It's intended to assist in prepping your tyres for a drag run but we're pretty certain it will get used off the strip just as much as on it.

Another thrill-oriented feature is the Drift Brake mode. It's essentially an innovative hybrid between a traditional and electronic handbrake. In its day-to-day form, it's an E-brake, but switch into Drift Mode and the brake handle becomes your dedicated rear brake regulator adding another layer of fun for enthusiasts wanting to explore their drifting skills in a controlled environment.

Make It Yours

There's no doubting the kind of fun a rear-wheel drive V8 coupe like the Mustang can deliver, but what sets this Mustang apart is the sheer range of customisations available. You have absolute control to make this car your own.

It starts with the Mustang button on the console that opens a treasure trove of adjustments, allowing you to personalise everything from driving modes, exhaust notes (quiet mode to all-out race mode), steering feedback, ambient lighting and digital dashboard designs (one for every driving mode).

Without a doubt, our favourite piece is the customisable digital instrument cluster, which can mimic iconic Mustang designs from the past. Choose from the likes of chrome-accented dials of the 1967 model, the retro vibes of the Fox Body era, or the sporty aesthetics of the SVT Cobra.

Infotainment

Ford is consistently a step above in terms of technology and features and this practice is continued in the new Mustang. The cutting-edge SYNC®4 infotainment system is controlled via the crisp and responsive 13.2-inch colour multi-function touchscreen display, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless charging station.

In terms of audio, it's surprising to see how understated the Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker sound system is throughout the cockpit. There are no door speakers slapped with branding - just a single B&O logo delicately placed on the centre dashboard speaker. Despite this, it gives off awesome sound so you can blast "Born in the USA" to your heart's content.

Pricing

In its most basic form, you can drive away in the new-gen Mustang GT for $87,338 - this will get you the six-speed manual gearbox, fastback style, and either the Oxford White or Race Red colour option.

If you'd rather have the auto gearbox, you'll pay just over $3,600 more, although if you're looking to have the wind in your hair, the convertible style is available exclusively with the auto transmission starting at $96,856 drive away.

There's a range of premium colour options available for another $700 each, while interior options are limited to the fastback model with the Recaro® leather accented sport seats as an option for just under $3,000 more.

The spec that we drove was an automatic fastback in Atlas Blue with Recaro sport seats and MagneRide® Suspension with red painted Brembo™ brake callipers. This set-up is available for $99,875 drive away.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT is a worthy successor to the existing model and continues the storied legacy of the Mustang name. We love how much nostalgia Ford has blended into the latest model with all the little easter eggs scattered about that are sure to make any Mustang enthusiast smile.

Ford continues to refine the Mustang to fit the modern era while maintaining the character and performance expected of an American muscle car. Whether you’re a die-hard Mustang fan or a newcomer to the scene, this is a car that promises to excite you every time you get behind the wheel.
